Rogue Basin
Jackson County
Grizzly Creek Crossing Replacement for Fish Passage
Fish Passage Improvement (2001)

Salmon License Plate Funds $4,807
Total Project Cost $20,343

Following the New Year’s Day flood of 1997, the county road on South Fork Little Butte Creek required repairs in many places, including the crossing over Grizzly Creek. The crossing, composed of a small crumpled culvert, had been identified previously as a hindrance to fish passage by the Rogue Basin Fish Access Team. Blocking access to eight miles of important habitat for coho, steelhead and cutthroat trout, the crossing was considered a high-priority for replacement. The Jackson County Public Works Department partnered with the Little Butte Creek Watershed Council to replace the damaged culvert with a fish-friendly crossing. With salmon license plate funds from OWEB, the council purchased a larger culvert which was installed during scheduled repairs in a manner allowing both juvenile and adult fish passage. As a result of this cooperative effort and salmon license plate funds, anadromous fish were spotted spawning for the first time in nearly 40 years above Grizzly Creek within weeks of project completion.
